The institution of slavery was one of both physical and psychological control. The institutionalization of slavery became deeply embedded in the economic, social, and governmental systems in the British colonies. However, enslaved people did not passively accept this system without resistance. In this essay, compare and contrast the ways in which slavery became institutionalized through laws, social practices, and systems of control to the ways in which enslaved people resisted these systems through revolts/rebellions, shared African American cultural identity development, family/kinship, and acts of truancy/outlaws/fugitives.
